Fixing Table Headers
the problem in one of our reports is, that there are a lot of detail lines
for each group, so if you scroll down to see them, the table header is not
visible. Our customers are complaining about that, because they have to
scroll up and down to see to which field the detail belongs.
Moreover it is not possible to split the table, because all details are a
logical group.
My question: Is it possible to fix a table header like the fixing function
in excel, so it can always be seen when you scroll down the details?
Thanks,
BjörnTable headers can be repeated on each page, but you can not do the excel
like thing... You can make your page smaller, but that's about it I think.

Look for this in Reporting Services 2005 (shipping as part of Yukon),
though.

Bjorn,
It's a little bit of a kludge but why not add a table footer and
simply repeat the information that is in the table header? That should
make the relevant information visible in a larger part of the page.

Fixed reports in Reporting Services using SSAS
really simple question without relaising it.
I have a Analysis Services cube that I'm querying from Reporting
Services 2005, I'm wondering how I can create a fixed style report that
has specfic members from one dimension in one axis and specific members
from another dimension in another.
Eg:
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug
Cost1 2 6 5 8 88 0 8 8
Cost15 0 0 0 0 0 6 54 5
Cost65 52 5 545 1 42 55 54 455
Cost15 545 0 555 0 22 2252 5 55
Cost95
I have found that it's quite easy to create this format in a dymamic
fashion but I have had no hope in doing so with fixed members in both
axis.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
SimonI think that you can make 1,15,65,15,95 members as a 'named set'
hope that helps

to create a "grid" of data in the form you want it to, you could just use a
fixed table and add the fields to the column or row that you want it to.
That would probably mean a lot of crossjoins or unions on the coloumns to
get the months tagged right, and have the different costs as rows.
Sorry to ask, but why do you want to do it fixed? This is sort of what
matrixes are made for, contrary to the tables.

Still, it must br possible to create a fixed grid report. I'll try your

The difference between my Excel report and a matrix based report is
that the Excel report is completely static. just a table with fixed
members in each axis. The members in each axis need to be fixed like a
PL report (see example)
http://www.ilytix.com/ImageFiles/Popup_P&L_Report.gif|||OK, the picture looks like a standard RS table. As long as your output is in
a usefull format, you could use a RS table. If you make sure you always get
the right data out (like you know you only get the same 4 rows of growth),
you can probably use a dynamic table. Or you can really hard code it,
returning several data sets with one row of data in each and creating
several single line tables put close in the report designer so they look
like one big table.
If your data set returns both dynamic growth and dates (months in your first
example), you could solve it by using a matrix. Make a row group for your
growth, and a column group for dates. "Pad" your data set to make sure you
always return the same number of months for dates, so you always get the
same number of month columns, and the same for the growth numbers. You might
have to tweak your mdx statemement a bit, but that's probably more usefull
than customizing the table.

Fixed number of Intervals
Hi friends,
We are using SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services for developing our Reports. In one of our Reports having chart can we show fixed number of Intervals on X axis or Y axis ?
-sandyee
I believe that you can. In the y axis and x axis properties it gives you a minimum value, maximum value, and interval property to set.Fixed header rowin Reporting Services
I've been devloping reports using Reporting Services. It's useful and fast.
However, I've this group of users who would like to fix the header row while
the data is able to scoll down and up without moving the header row. Is
there any configuration that can solve my problem? Below is a simple
illustration, hope anyone can help me in this.
| X header | Y header | Z header | ... | => This row must be fixed
| X data1 | Y data1 | Z data1 |... | ^
| X data2 | Y data2 | Z data2 |... | |
| X data3 | Y data3 | Z data3 |... | |
| X data4 | Y data4 | Z data4 |... | | These data rows
should be able to
| X data5 | Y data5 | Z data5 |... | | scroll up and down
| ........ | ........ | ........ |... | |
| X dataN | Y dataN | Z dataN |... | v
Best Regards,
Samie
I don't know how to do this.
I suspect that you will have a better response within the Reporting Services

First run of reports is SLOW
I realize that the first time you run a report from RS it's slow because it
has to load everything up. Is there some way around this? Can I setup a
report to refresh itself every so often?
Anyway to turn this off? I hate the 30 second wait time to view the first
report...That is what I do, the official work around didn't work for me (IIS
configuration). If you have a report autorefresh every 5 minutes that will
keep everything ready to go.

IIS settings etc. Below is the posting from someone else describing this,
but I just have a report on my box that refreshes every 5 minutes (set this
via report properties I believe).

If you are running Windows 2003 server for your IIS reportserver, then this
is a simple issue - I'll explain what happens:
The report service engine, once it is idle for more than the default 20
minutes, the worker process is shutdown.
This is controlled by IIS.
Open up the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
Expand the server node then the application pools.
On my IIS machine, I created an application pool dedicated to the
reportserver & reportmanager virtual webs.
But anyways, for the application pool that the reportserver is pointing to
if you left everything to their defaults will be the DefaultAppPool.
Right click the default app pool and select properties.
There are two things that are checked by default - On the recycling tab
there is a checkbox for recycling worker processes - it is currently set to
1740 minutes (29 hours). Leave it.
The other one is on the performance tab - which is the one you are
interested in changing...
See the "Idle Timeout" section and increase the number of minutes to be 8
hours a typical working day - 8*60 = 480 minutes.
Next, to be sure the "morning person" that runs the first report doesn't get
the delay, set up a schedule for either a dummy or adhoc report to fire off
like at 6am so that the report component worker processes get loaded.
I hope this helps you.
There is no need to have a report fire off every minute to keep things
alive - it is just that the report service was "unloaded" and needed to load
back up.

doesn't do it. The last step was creating a subscription that ran every day.

FireFox challenge/response
We're having a problem with one of our major clients. We developed a series
of SRS reports that works fine in Internet Explorer. However, when we
navigate to the site using Firefox 1.0, we get prompted to enter a
UserName/Password, which doesn't happen w/ IE. I have tried a lot of
different things to try to get rid of this, but I haven't found a way to do
so. Essentially, we have the Report Users group, which has Browse access to
the reports. All Domain Users are a member of this group. I have even
tried turning on Anonymous access to both the Reports and ReportServer
virtual directories, to no avail - the prompt keeps coming up.
Unfortunately, our client isn't very MS friendly, and we don't have the
ability to control which browser they use ... and at least half the company
is now using FireFox!

From my experience the only reason it doesn't happen in IE is because
you've set your RS site as a "Local Intranet" site within the Internet
Settings in Windows. IE then passes the users domain ID/PW
automatically thus bypassing the prompt to login. Firefox/Mozilla can't
do this so you the prompt will always comeup. You can tell your end
users they need to login then click the 'remember password' so they
atleast don't have to type in each time.
Re-reading you posting the above may not really apply, I guess it sounds
like you are linking directly to a report - and that report's datasource
is set to use the users creds for authentication when the report is run?
Same issue as above Firefox can't pass these autmagically like IE -
I'd suggest having the data source use a fixed domain ID/PW.

Firefox and IE 7 access to Web SQL Server Reports
interface for SQL 2005 Reports? I know that the Frame is the issue for
FireFox (is there an easy way to fix this') but I am running into problems
where IE7 just crashes when it connects to SQL Server Reporting Services.
Any ideas?

Does anyone know if Firefox rendering for HTML reports has been imporved in Katmai RS?
Michael
Did you try installing SP2? We made some fixes there. If there is a specific report that isn't working, you could post it to http://connect.microsoft.com. We don't have anything major planned for 2008.
|||Brian,
My matrix report still comes out very narrow (just a few pixels) per column, even with SP2. Is there a way to avoid this besides putting transparent gif's in the column?
Michael
|||Are you using the ReportViewer control to view the report? Or are you using Report Manager?
|||Actually, I'm calling the report through a web service, and having it render the HTML directly.

Hi Michael,
We did address the issue you described in Service Pack 2 of SQL 2005. The fix required that we output slightly different HTML for IE vs. FireFox. When looking at the report through the ReportViewer control, all the appropriate user agent information is sent to the server so that the renderer can return the proper output. However, when rendering reports via the web service there is nothing that sends the user agent -- the solution is to do it yourself.
You should add the DeviceInfo parameter "UserAgent" and set the value to "Gecko". This will tell the renderer to emit FireFox HTML.
Best regards,
Chris

Ah! Perfect. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the tip. I didn't see it in the instruction manual.

Chris,
I tried that, and the result was a little better, although most of my borders did not display, the column width for the first two columns was off, and for some reason, the page brought my Firefox browser to a sluggish standstill, the kind you'd expect if you were viewing a 25MB HTML page. I can send you the before and after versions if you'd like.
Michael
|||Hi Michael, yes I would like to see the output that you are getting. Can you send me the HTML files?
Thanks,

Yes, I will e-mail them right now.
Michael

Chris,
I tried sending you the files to the e-mail listed in your profile, but my server said "Sorry, I couldn't find any host named online.microsoft.com.". What is the best way to get you the files?

Hi Michael, that's weird... try removing the "online." part and try agian.
Thanks for your patience,

Firefox
I've used Crystal Reports and I'm very familiar with that system. However,
this application needs to be hosted by an ISP on the internet so I'm now
constrained by the services offered by the hosting service.
When I've investigated Crystal hosting, the price jumps up significantly and
I was told by one hosting company that if I did find a Crystal hosting
service, they are probably using a dodgy licensing model. This project is
also cost constrained...
However, companies like www.discountasp.net offer SQL Server 2005 with
reporting services for just $15 a month which is great. I'm just watching
the webcasts from Microsoft and reporting services looks ideal and pretty
neat.
But I'm little concerned about cross-browser compatibility... does anyone
have any comments on this? Firefox is probably the only other browser that I
must support.
Thanks, Rob.

Generally speaking, the compatibility is pretty good with Firefox in
comparison with IE6 and IE7. There are a few drawbacks however. One is
that when viewing reports directly in the Report Manager, IE shows the
entire report page in the initial view; whereas, Firefox has a
scrunched down version about one-third the normal height of the report
page, which requires vertical scrolling to view the entire report. The
search control that is naturally a part of the toolbar in the Report
Manager for IE, does not exist in Firefox (though the user can select
Ctrl+F to do a search on the current page in Firefox; but, not quite
the same thing). Also, drill through report functionality does not
work as well in Firefox as it does in IE. Otherwise, the main
differences between Crystal Reports and SSRS are that: there are
slightly different export options, they have a different production
licensing scheme and that Crystal Reports expression syntax is
different than that of SSRS, which uses VB.NET syntax. Also, CR has
been around longer and has a few minor functionality options that SSRS
does not. Hope this helps.
