Firefox/Safari support
Our major client is moving to a more Mac-based environment. We have found a
number of different ways to work around SRS' browser limitations, but it
looks like there are some showstoppers. It seems that you can *mostly* work
around problems in Mac FireFox, but Safari is pretty hopeless, as is Mac IE.
For example, we aren't able to show charts in Safari, but they do work on
Mac FF, although the fonts are an issue. Spacing on tables is funky on any
browser other than IE6.0 on the PC, but you can use transparent GIFs set to
a specific size to force a particular table width. We generate our reports
for the Mac using a web service that talks to IE, then display them as PDFs,
rather than dealing with browser issues head-on, but this kills any
opportunity to do a dashboard with drill-through capability.
I'd love to hear what other workarounds people have come up with, because we
have had great success with SRS to date. Browser issues are getting to be a
showstopper, though, and we're starting to look at ColdFusion/Flash
reporting, which has some nice advantages in its new version...
JimIs this SRS 2000 or 2005? I know that ASP.NET 2005 is supposed to be
very Firefox / Safari friendly, so I am curious as to how SRS has
improved, if at all.

really improve their browser support, but I'm certainly open to hear
something to the contrary. If you have any links to somebody impartial
(non-MS) who says FF & Safari are better supported, please let me know.

tested it yet.
I suggest getting the 120 day evaluation edition (SQL 2005). Note that you
can use RS 2005 with SQL 2000 as its object//metadata store.
Try it out and let us know if/how much has it improved. Sure seems worth
taking a little time to look at it versus totally switching to a new
product.

you're aware, 80% of people never change their defaults on their computers.
While it's good if FF is better supported, we've met quite a few Mac users
who'd never even *heard* of FF, much less use it.
Probably we will get the SRS 2005 eval and work with it, but the lack of
Safari support is discouraging. This seems to be a Microsoft wide thing:
the .NET 2.0 Beta 2 didn't work at all with Safari, in any way. We'll see
how things go now that it's been released...

I shouldn't have to rewrite the rewrite the web control in order for it

Firefox(2?) report rendering problems
incorrectly in Firefox 2. So we made a custom report control that calls the
reporting services and renders in HTML 4.0 and the formatting is still messed
up. Basically everything is crammed into the left 5% or so of the page so
all of the text is a jumbled mess. Has anyone tried their reports in Firefox
2 and had success? Anyone encountered this same problem? Thanks!

Firefox vs IE, make RS always open in IE?
RS2005 with SS2005.
I solved the authentication problem by setting IE to Tools, Security,
Intranet to User Authentication, Logon, all the way down at the bottom
of the list to Automatic logon with current user name and password.
BUT I still get the rendering errors...reports don't look right, etc.,
I have not seen any fixes in this list.
Is it possible for me to make the Reports and ReportServer sites on my
dev box to always open in IE and not in Firefox'
Thank you, TomI also use Firefox, I use the IE View extension to always view in IE.
Unfortunatelly for me our web app will also support Firefox and the reports
go along with that. Microsoft RS does not support Firefox and I haven't
seen any thing that states that they plan to. I think there are two main
issues, the Chart height and table column widths. We don't have the chart
height issue because we use Dundas and they don't appear to have the same
problem...which is kind of interesting since they also write the native
chart in RS. They are forced into using the custom control set of
interfaces which means they have image quality issues due to the limitations
in RS, but for this matter they are better. The other problem we have been
able to fix with the empty wide textbox scattered above tables. This idea
comes from the notes from Jon Galloway in the link below.

Hi Max,
Thank you for using MSDN Managed Newsgroup Support.
I understand that your report does not show the right format in Firefox
browser.
Unfortunately, Microsoft does not support any browsers other than Internet
Explorer. All the Render Extension in Reporting Services are developed
against IE. So there is no way to guarantee that Reporting Services will
perform well with other browsers.
Please understand that we don't have an environment to reproduce and
troubleshoot your issue, but please feel free to involve me during the
process of contacting third-party support, I am glad to provide any
information.

Anyone have suggestions?? My clients would like to view reports in both IE and Firefox.

Firefox Issues in 2005...
Can someone please verify that the following items are not supported in Firefox. Our app issues an http request to the report server (url access). The following differences are seen between IE and FF:
1) The message "Report is being generated" does not disply in FF during report generation.
2) The printer icon does not appear in the toolbar.
3) Is there any plan to support search functionality within the report in the future?
Thanks.
I'm not sure about #1 or #3, but for #2, client side print is only supported in IE. This is because the client side printing is done via an ActiveX control.
|||Thanks Daniel. I'm recommending to my clients that the IE Tab add-on be installed in Firefox; it solves the problems with the search bar and also displays the "Report is being generated" message. I understand why the search bar functionality is not available in vanilla FF but I'm not sure why the Report generation message with the twirly doesn't appear.FireFox challenge/response
We're having a problem with one of our major clients. We developed a series
of SRS reports that works fine in Internet Explorer. However, when we
navigate to the site using Firefox 1.0, we get prompted to enter a
UserName/Password, which doesn't happen w/ IE. I have tried a lot of
different things to try to get rid of this, but I haven't found a way to do
so. Essentially, we have the Report Users group, which has Browse access to
the reports. All Domain Users are a member of this group. I have even
tried turning on Anonymous access to both the Reports and ReportServer
virtual directories, to no avail - the prompt keeps coming up.
Unfortunately, our client isn't very MS friendly, and we don't have the
ability to control which browser they use ... and at least half the company
is now using FireFox!

From my experience the only reason it doesn't happen in IE is because
you've set your RS site as a "Local Intranet" site within the Internet
Settings in Windows. IE then passes the users domain ID/PW
automatically thus bypassing the prompt to login. Firefox/Mozilla can't
do this so you the prompt will always comeup. You can tell your end
users they need to login then click the 'remember password' so they
atleast don't have to type in each time.
Re-reading you posting the above may not really apply, I guess it sounds
like you are linking directly to a report - and that report's datasource
is set to use the users creds for authentication when the report is run?
Same issue as above Firefox can't pass these autmagically like IE -
I'd suggest having the data source use a fixed domain ID/PW.

Firefox browser support
We are trying to use SQL RS 2005 at our Company. We have a mix of MAC and
Windows users and I am trying to see whether RS 2005 can work with FireFox. I
created a simple matrix report and the rendering is quite bad, fields dont
have the right widths (IE shows correctly).
How do I get the matrix reports to show correctly in Firefox? Even if it is
extra code that needs to be written somewhere, thats fine. I just want to
have an idea of where to write the code (to show right widths for fields) and
how to implement the code? Any suggestions?
I know the firefox support for RS 2005 has become a FAQ, but I would like to
explore the work-arounds that can be done.

I am having the same problem. I could tell that the data are shown in
firefox, however, it is so tiny that it is not legible, but they show
up nicely in IE.
Any good solution? Thanks.
Firefox and password problem with URL access
"localhost" but Firefox (1.07 - latest version) prompts repeatedly for id and
password. Even when the correct admin credentials are entered it still
continues to prompt for password. We had similar problem with RS2005 in IE. The quick fix was to go into
Tools | Internet Options | Security | Local Intranet | Custom Settings
then scroll down to User Authentication | Logon and set to "Automatic
logon with current username and password"
You may also have to do this for the "Internet" zone too.
We got group policies set to cure this in the long term, but this is
not my area so I can't give specifics.
Now in Firefox, I don't know if there is a setting to pass windows
credentials through to IIS - which is what is going wrong in your
scenario. I've had a quick check and couldn't see anything. But with
Sept CTP it doesn't work well at all with FireFox anyway!!

Firefox and other non-IE browsers(again)
Currently my reports can't be browsed by Firefox and other Mac browsers, and that's going to be a stopper for further using of SSRS in the future in my company. I was expecting SP2 to do something about this, but it hasn't solved anything. I'm sure it's a very easy patch for MS, but by maintaining this (artificial?) limitation they're going to make us move from SSRS and even the full SQL Server stack for future projects.
Any other *real* solution, other than CSS and big rectangle in the top of the report? This could be a huge problem for my client also.
I wonder how many customers Microsoft lost over this. I know it is free and all (with Sql Server), but doesn't do much for customer confidence.
Firefox and other non-IE browsers(again)
Currently my reports can't be browsed by Firefox and other Mac browsers, and that's going to be a stopper for further using of SSRS in the future in my company. Firefox and IE 7 access to Web SQL Server Reports
interface for SQL 2005 Reports? I know that the Frame is the issue for
FireFox (is there an easy way to fix this') but I am running into problems
where IE7 just crashes when it connects to SQL Server Reporting Services.
Any ideas?

Can you tell me where it is crashing?

FireFox 1.5.0.1 w/ SRS 2000 Toolbar Broken
I'm having a problem with report rendering in FireFox 1.5. For some reason the toolbar is about 200px high with some of the toolbar icons wrapping. Worse, the toolbar doesn't work. The first/next/back/last icons don't work and the page number textbox is disabled. Export doesn't work either. So basically it's not even useable. I've read that offically the Find/Print features are not supported for FireFox, but nothing beyond that. I also have had the same problem that I've seen in other forums where the report table itself is squished. I was able to fix that by using the solution that has been posted. For those that care, the solution involves adding a textbox with cangrow = false.
It's pretty frustrating that what is otherwise a very good reporting service can't operate with a 1st tier browser like FireFox. Hopefully I'm just missing something.. Anyone know a fix for the toolbar? Does FireFox 1.5 work ok with SRS 2005?
It seems the toolbar worked in FireFox 1.0.7, and has since broken in 1.5. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know a fix for this beyond hidding the toolbar and writing a custom one?

Does anyone know if Firefox rendering for HTML reports has been imporved in Katmai RS?
Michael
Did you try installing SP2? We made some fixes there. If there is a specific report that isn't working, you could post it to http://connect.microsoft.com. We don't have anything major planned for 2008.
|||Brian,
My matrix report still comes out very narrow (just a few pixels) per column, even with SP2. Is there a way to avoid this besides putting transparent gif's in the column?
Michael
|||Are you using the ReportViewer control to view the report? Or are you using Report Manager?
|||Actually, I'm calling the report through a web service, and having it render the HTML directly.

Hi Michael,
We did address the issue you described in Service Pack 2 of SQL 2005. The fix required that we output slightly different HTML for IE vs. FireFox. When looking at the report through the ReportViewer control, all the appropriate user agent information is sent to the server so that the renderer can return the proper output. However, when rendering reports via the web service there is nothing that sends the user agent -- the solution is to do it yourself.
You should add the DeviceInfo parameter "UserAgent" and set the value to "Gecko". This will tell the renderer to emit FireFox HTML.
Best regards,
Chris

Ah! Perfect. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the tip. I didn't see it in the instruction manual.

Chris,
I tried that, and the result was a little better, although most of my borders did not display, the column width for the first two columns was off, and for some reason, the page brought my Firefox browser to a sluggish standstill, the kind you'd expect if you were viewing a 25MB HTML page. I can send you the before and after versions if you'd like.
Michael
|||Hi Michael, yes I would like to see the output that you are getting. Can you send me the HTML files?
Thanks,

Yes, I will e-mail them right now.
Michael

Chris,
I tried sending you the files to the e-mail listed in your profile, but my server said "Sorry, I couldn't find any host named online.microsoft.com.". What is the best way to get you the files?

Hi Michael, that's weird... try removing the "online." part and try agian.
Thanks for your patience,

Firefox
I've used Crystal Reports and I'm very familiar with that system. However,
this application needs to be hosted by an ISP on the internet so I'm now
constrained by the services offered by the hosting service.
When I've investigated Crystal hosting, the price jumps up significantly and
I was told by one hosting company that if I did find a Crystal hosting
service, they are probably using a dodgy licensing model. This project is
also cost constrained...
However, companies like www.discountasp.net offer SQL Server 2005 with
reporting services for just $15 a month which is great. I'm just watching
the webcasts from Microsoft and reporting services looks ideal and pretty
neat.
But I'm little concerned about cross-browser compatibility... does anyone
have any comments on this? Firefox is probably the only other browser that I
must support.
Thanks, Rob.

Generally speaking, the compatibility is pretty good with Firefox in
comparison with IE6 and IE7. There are a few drawbacks however. One is
that when viewing reports directly in the Report Manager, IE shows the
entire report page in the initial view; whereas, Firefox has a
scrunched down version about one-third the normal height of the report
page, which requires vertical scrolling to view the entire report. The
search control that is naturally a part of the toolbar in the Report
Manager for IE, does not exist in Firefox (though the user can select
Ctrl+F to do a search on the current page in Firefox; but, not quite
the same thing). Also, drill through report functionality does not
work as well in Firefox as it does in IE. Otherwise, the main
differences between Crystal Reports and SSRS are that: there are
slightly different export options, they have a different production
licensing scheme and that Crystal Reports expression syntax is
different than that of SSRS, which uses VB.NET syntax. Also, CR has
been around longer and has a few minor functionality options that SSRS
does not. Hope this helps.
